How to Easily Lose Weight as a Busy Mom

Do you ever give your kids time outs? Time outs to refresh and regroup can be so, so valuable both for kids and for us. Read the full post at

If you've followed me for very long, you know that one of my passions is helping frustrated and overwhelmed moms become happy moms, so they feel better and more confident and enjoy motherhood more. Well, part of being happy, at least for me, has come from figuring out how to easily lose weight.

To paraphrase Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, "Exercise gives you endorphins; endorphins make you happy; happy moms don't feel overwhelmed and yell at their kids; they just don't!" (OK, she didn't say it just like that, but the same principle applies.)

Exercise is definitely one of the habits I recommend, simply because of how good it can make you feel. So I decided to practice what I preach more consistently and see what kind of a difference it could make in my life!

When Rachel was a baby, although it took me literally 9 months to lose the baby weight, I did lose it. What I did then for exercise was to walk walk walk, pushing her in the stroller. We had so many great adventures, many with her snoozing, but great adventures none the less. I literally wore holes in my sneakers because I walked so much!

I've done other types of exercise over the years, but I started wondering if maybe walking consistently was the key to feeling good and keeping my weight in check. It worked then, why not now?!

Enter "One Watch to Rule the World" aka "Precious" aka the Apple watch I got for Christmas.

I've become obsessed with it!!! You set up exercise and active minute goals, as well as hours stood, and it automatically tracks them for you. Each one has its own ring for you to complete each day, and when the rings close, you get this really fun fireworks effect on the watch face!

My hubby and kids laugh at my obsession with closing the rings each day. Last week when I was at the beach, I needed just a little bit more to close the activity ring, so at around 11 at night, I went for a walk on the boardwalk (he wouldn't let me go alone, and so he begrudgingly got some exercise as well). When he whined about it to the kids, my daughter just replied, "One watch to rule the world!"

And it really is! I'm a slave to the ring! Haha! So far I'm on a 35 day streak!! Yay me!

I actually have lost weight as well. Not a ton but consistently, little by little, each week, I lose weight. And I feel great!

So, how can my newfound obsession help you (even if you don't want to also become a slave to the Rings)? In your quest to be a happy mom, I think exercise (specifically walking) ranks near the top of daily habits you should cultivate so that you'll feel more energetic, happier, and calmer overall. Anyone can do it. It takes no special equipment. You can walk with the kids and/or the dog.

How to Easily Lose Weight as a Busy Mom

Here's what I've found:

  • A 30 minute brisk walk or about a 3 mile casual stroll closes the exercise ring. THIS STEP IS KEY. The rest kind of falls into place.

  • If you feel your not in shape or are time-crunched, start with a shorter stroll and work your way up to a longer one.

  • Standing and walking around for 1 to 2 minutes each hour for 12 hours closes the stand ring. As a mom, this is easy to accomplish with normal mom activities.

  • Those normal mom activities, like laundry, dishes, and putting away toys, complete your activity ring.

  • Doing this consistently WILL make you feel better and lose weight over time! Pinky promise!

You don't need to become a slave to the Rings like me (although I'm having a blast!) but you can take these same principles and apply them to yourself.
